Ojnare forest and organizing resistance to environmental exploitation
Guest : Johan Berg, Nature and Youth Sweden September 30 2012
Plans to mine limestone in the Ojnare forest on Gotland have precipitated one of the most evocative environmental confrontations between activists and industry in recent memory in Sweden. A range of ecological values are at stake, incuding potential affects on local drinking water quality, as is the precedent of mining in sensitive natural areas in Sweden, a country ostensibly committed to environmental protection.
The autumn season on Think Globally Radio starts with a visit from Linn Andersson, a leading activist and field biologist with the organisation Nature & Youth Sweden (Fältbiologerna), which has organized much of the opposition to mining in Ojnare forest. The ecological aspects, the politcal and legal case, as well as the efforts to build a network in opposition to environmental exploitation, will all be discussed this Sunday on Think Globally Radio.
