Elaborating the Anthropocene: Sverker Sörlin
with Sverker Sörlin
The ‘planetary boundaries’ framework has been a scientific sensation since first presented in the journal Nature in 2009. It provides a powerful means of conceptualizing the impact of humans on the global environment, and how transgressing Earth’s biophysical boundaries risks compromising the Holocene’s ‘safe operating space for humanity’.
Prof. Sverker Sörlin is a professor of environmental history at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and a co-author of the original planetary boundaries article as well as an update of the framework recently published in the journal Science. Prof. Sörlin visits Think Globally Radio this week to elaborate on the place of planetary boundaries in the ongoing discussion of the Anthropocene concept. He will also discuss one of the more celebrated events in the history of environmentalism: Earth Day, which celebrated its 45th anniversary this week.
