South Korea’s perspective on International Climate Negotiations
Guest : Son Sung-hwan, Ambassador of South Korea
South Korea is situated in an interesting position in the realm of climate diplomacy. Although it has become a country know for high technology and a highly developed economy, it is classified among developing countries in the Kyoto Protocol as a non-Annex I state. It can therefore serve as a bridge of sorts between the industrialized and developing world, an otherwise recurring fault line in international climate negotiations.
Think Globally Radio this week has the opportunity to meet Ambassador Son Sung-hwan, who before becoming the Ambassador to Sweden last year served as South Korea’s ambassador for climate change and was thus deeply involved in climate diplomacy. Ambassador Son thus provides a unique set of insights into the negotiations leading up to the year 2015, which the UNFCCC has targeted for having a new agreement in place to bring about a global effort for tackling climate change.
