The Arctic Council and sustainability in a region in transition
Guest : Gustaf Lind, Sweden Arctic ambassador April 1 2012
The Arctic is a theater of global environmental change, and also contains a range of sensitive ecosystems at risk from the increased interest in exploitation. Competition, conflict, cooperation and coordination are all possible outcomes between countries and companies that seek to stake claims on for example natural resources and shipping routes as the ice recedes.
The Swedish Natural History Museum this past week hosted a scientific gathering of polar researchers and a high level meeting of the Arctic Council, the regional organization that seeks to safeguard and coordinate sustainable development in the Arctic. Sweden is currently chairman of the Arctic Council, and on Sunday Think Globally Radio meets Sweden Arctic Ambassador Gustaf Lind to discuss the array of issues that will influence the future of the Arctic and determine whether sustainability can be maintained.
